Christ's College Music Society (CCMS)

Chair: Zoë Lakota-Baldwin (zl339)

Founded in 1710, Christ’s College Music Society (CCMS) is one of college’s most established and vibrant societies. Whatever your musical ability, or whether you just want to listen to some fantastic concerts, CCMS has something for you.
CCMS organises a number of ensembles:

  • Christ’s Voices: non-auditioned choir, who sing a range of music from classical repertoire, to musical theatre, gospel and more. Voices is open to all college members, and performs at the Michaelmas and Lent term CCMS concerts.
  • Orchestra: non-auditioned orchestra, open to all college students of any ability. The orchestra performs at the Michaelmas and Lent term CCMS concerts.
  • Jazz: Christ’s students who enjoy playing jazz meet in a variety of small ensembles. Jazz ensembles perform in our termly Week 5 Blues night, and can perform at the Michaelmas and Lent term concerts and in chapel recitals. Christ’s Jazz also provides a great platform to form ensembles to audition for May Week garden parties and May Balls.
  • Chamber music: CCMS organises a variety of chamber music groups, recently including string quartets, string quintets, and brass quintets. They can perform at the Michaelmas and Lent term concerts and in chapel recitals.

CCMS holds a concert in Michaelmas term in the Chapel, and in Lent term at Great St. Mary’s church. In conjunction with the JCR we provide entertainment for the termly Week 5 Blues night in the Function Room. CCMS also presents regular recitals in the Chapel, performed by college members as well as guest musicians. These provide an excellent opportunity to perform an extended programme, either as a soloist or as part of a jazz or chamber music ensemble. Each year the recital programme begins with a concert by CCMS committee members, followed by an opportunity for new students to perform in the Freshers’ recital. In Lent term CCMS also presents the Charles Blackham Memorial Recital Competition, judged by an experienced panel including our Director of Music David Rowland. Most recitals are free of charge, as is Week 5 Blues, and we charge for tickets to the Michaelmas and Lent concerts. A black-tie dinner is held annually in Lent term in the OCR, and a garden party is held during May Week.
