Male Welfare & Gender Equalities - Callum Jessop
Email: welfare-m (@thejcr.co.uk)
Hi, I’m Callum and this is my second year at Christ’s studying Modern and Medieval Languages.
My job as a Welfare and Gender Equalities Officer is, broadly speaking, to ensure that all Christ’s students are equally able to enjoy everything the University has to offer. Caring for the welfare of students means helping to ensure the physical, mental and sexual health of the student body by finding resources, being encyclopaedia of all the services College and the University provide and acting as a liaison between students, College and CUSU.
Formally I am responsible for chairing the Welfare and Rights Committee with Mira, the other Welfare and Gender Equalities Officer. This committee is made up of students from across College who represent women, men, LGBT+, BME and international students, as well as members dedicated to mental and sexual health. This diverse group comes together to provide support for all Christ’s students and seeks to ensure that all students’ needs are appropriately met by College.
Mira and I hope not just to promote gender equality, but by working with the Welfare Committee, equality in every sense. Our various campaigns, talks and discussions should raise an awareness of contemporary issues — so keep checking our Facebook page and your emails to see what’s coming up. We also provide students with sexual health supplies, so do contact myself, Mira or Barnaby, our Sexual Health Officer, should supplies run out.
One of the most important parts of my job is being available to talk to any student about any concerns they may have, whether for themselves or a friend, however small or overwhelming the problem may be. As with all matters of welfare, confidentiality is paramount and will be respected. I can put you in touch with a variety of different services that deal specifically with any number of problems. With that in mind, please stop me if you see me in college, or contact me by email at firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
All the best,
